„Einen trockenen Martini bitte!” Den bestellte James Bond in dem Roman “Casino Royale” aus dem Jahr 1953 und fügte noch hinzu: „Moment. Drei Maß Gordon’s, ein Maß Wodka und ein halbes Maß Kina Lillet. Gut schütteln, bis es eiskalt ist und dann ein langes dünnes Stück Zitronenschale dazu.” Es war die Geburtsstunde eines der berühmtesten Cocktails der Welt: Dem Vesper Bond Martini.
Diesen gibt es nun seit Mitte April 2013, nach Originalrezept, auch in der Vesper Bar am Kurfürstendamm. Der Eingang befindet sich gleich rechts vom Restaurant Balthazar des Hotels Louisa’s Place. „Es war schon immer mein Traum, mit meinem Geschäftspartner Stilian Laufer eine Cocktailbar in meiner Wohngegend, direkt am Ku’damm zu eröffnen. Hier um die Ecke bin ich als Kind groß geworden”, sagt Geschäftsführer Thorsten Schermall, der unter anderem auch Besitzer des 40Seconds ist.
Die Bar ist übersichtlich, einfach und funktional gehalten. Es soll nicht zu viel im Wege stehen. Neben dem 110 Jahre alten antiken Holzboden fallen gleich links vom Eingang drei Lichtsäulen aus einem dünnmaschigen Bronzegeflecht mit Kupfer und die Retro- Möbel ohne Ecken und Kanten im 60er-Look auf. Über dem mit Walnuss-Vollholzstreben bestückten Bartresen hängen kugelförmige Lampen, die an den Satelliten Sputnik erinnern. „Die runden Lichtobjekte mit den trichterförmigen Lichtaufsätzen sind mit 24 Karat vergoldet. Und diese Trichter kann man nach Lust und Laune auf der Kugel hin und her verschieben, da die Lampe magnetisch ist. Das gesamte Lichtkonzept hat Designer Oliver Michl kreiert”, erzählt Schermall. „Mit der eigens für den Ort angefertigten Inneneinrichtung im 60er-Jahre-James-Bond-Stil wollten wir Gemütlichkeit schaffen, einen Ort, wo man träumen, sich einfach fallen lassen kann. Wie in einem Wohnzimmer.
Hier ist auch Rauchen erlaubt. „Auch auf der Karte dreht sich natürlich alles um das Thema Bond. Es gibt sieben verschiedene Vesper Martinis, einige Longdrinks, wie den Tanqueray Tonic oder Moscow Mule sowie diverse Cocktails. Alle Drinks werden mit Russian Season Vodka oder Tanqueray Gin gemixt. Der einzige Wermutstropfen dieser Bar ist der Kina Lillet, der ausschließlich für den bitteren Geschmack des legendären Vesper Bond Martini sorgt.

“A dry Martini.“ This is the iconic drink James Bond ordered in the novel “Casino Royale” which was published in the year 1953. And then the most famous agent in the world added ‘Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large slice of lemon peel. Got it?’ This was the birth of one of the most known cocktails in the world: The Vesper Bond Martini.
This drink has been offered since the middle of April in 2013, according to the original recipe, in the Vesper Bar on the Kurfürstendamm. The entrance of this establishment is placed next to the restaurant Balthazar of the Hotel Louisa’s Place. “ It has always been my dream to establish a cocktail bar with my partner Stilian Laufer in our neighborhood, directly on the Kurfürstendamm. Here, I grew up. Here, I spent my childhood.”, said the manager Thorsten Schermall, who at the same time is running the Berliner discotheque 40Seconds.
The bar is fairly minimalistically designed and functional. Nothing should be placed and positioned to stand in the way. Apart from the 110-year-old antique wooden floor, the light pillars equipped of a finely woven bronze mesh coating stand out. The retro furniture with organic non-angular shapes in the style of the 60ies are really eye-catching. Above the extravagantly bar counter globular lamps, which remind you of the satellite Spuktnik, are hanging from the ceiling. This is pure luxury. The round lighting objects are coated with 24-carat gold. At the same time, this construction is provided with sophisticated mechanical features, as they can be moved at will. The globes are magnetic. The entire interior design custom-built for the bar is designed to create a 60ies atmosphere which truly reminds you of James Bond. It is cozy, it is a place where you can dive into your dreams, you can let go of yourself, it’s like a living room.
Here, smoking is allowed as well. “Of course, the entire menu is revolving around James Bond. Seven different Vesper Martinis are available, several Longdrinks like the Tanqueray Tonic or Moscow Mule as well as diverse Cocktails. All drinks are mixed with Russian Season Vodka or Tanqueray Gin. The only drop of bitterness of this bar is the Kina Lillet, which is exclusively used to create the bitter taste of the legendary Vesper Bond Martini. ”
